• Retention and support components of implant prosthesis.
• Points to discuss with patients during consultation appointments.
• Formulating pragmatic follow up appointments for the full arch edentulous patients.
Under function, teeth introduce internal loading of the maxillary
and mandibular alveolar bone therefore, maintaining the
stability of the alveolar boney volume. Once teeth are removed,
“disuse atrophy” causes the resorption of the alveolar bone.
Implant prosthesis can reintroduce the internal loading and
therefore slow or halt the continued resorption of the edentulous
alveolar bony volume. Although, all implant prosthesis are
“implant retained”; not all implant prosthesis under function
load the alveolar bone. This presentation will discuss the
biomechanics of full arch implant prosthesis allowing for an
organized discussion of the pros and cons of various treatment
options with patients at their consultation appointment.
